MEN’S CRICKET: Captain Harry Brook smashed an unbeaten 114 as England eased to a 119-run victory over Sri Lanka in Tuesday evening’s first leg of their three-match Twenty20 series. 

Hampshire paceman Sonny Baker was the pick of the English bowling attack with 3-12. England are rated as the world’s second best short-format team, seven places above Sri Lanka. 

The second match takes place at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff this evening.

HORSE RACING: The Cheltenham-based father and son training partnership of Jonjo and AJ O’Neill came up trumps with a 120/1 treble at Uttoxeter on Monday. 

Jockey Jonjo O’Neill junior continued the family connection when he steered home 11/2 shot Nightflyer before Mt Fugi Park saw off Bagheera Ginge in a handicap chase. 

Jonjo was back in the saddle as Gaelic Rambler stormed home by eight lengths in the last race of the day.

MEN’S FOOTBALL: New signing Hamzad Kargbo scored the only goal of the game as Scottish Championship debutants Stenhousemuir continued their superb start to the season with Tuesday night’s 1-0 win over Partick Thistle. 

The Ochilview Park club are now unbeaten in their opening six league games and sit three points clear of Raith Rovers at the top. 

Partick, last year’s runners-up, are two points further back in third.

MEN’S BASKETBALL: Luke Nelson sank two free throws in the dying seconds as Manchester became the first British club to ever win a Champions League qualifier with a narrow 74-73 victory over Wurzburg Baskets. 

Keon Thompson top-scored with 14 points for Manchester who will face north-western Spain’s Lugo this afternoon for a place in the semi-finals. The Spaniards crushed tournament hosts, Bulgaria’s Rilski Sportist 126-80 in their opening game.
