Russell’s power unit failure in the closing stages of Sunday’s Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia left him a whopping 84 points adrift of team-mate Kimi Antonelli with seven rounds remaining.
The British driver conceded that hopes of a maiden title are now “exceptionally unlikely.”
MEN’S FOOTBALL: Defending champions and current table-toppers Brora Rangers take the Highland League’s only unbeaten record to Forres on Wednesday evening, while second-placed Inverurie Locos host Invergordon.
Formartine meet Deveronvale, Fraserburgh are at Banks O’Dee and out-of-form Buckie play Lossiemouth.
Bottom club Rothes face Huntly, Turriff are in Keith, Nairn County take on Strathspey and Wick are up against Clachnacuddin.
HORSE RACING: 19-year-old apprentice jockey Conor Whiteley received a 27-day ban starting today after repeatedly breaching the whipping rules.
During the last six months, he has used the whip “improperly or excessively” on four separate occasions, the latest of which was at Newcastle in September.
Whiteley has ridden 36 winners from 334 rides this calendar year and currently sits fifth in the apprentice jockeys’ championship.
BASEBALL: The Chicago White Sox are 2-0 up on the Cleveland Guardians in the best of five American League divisional play-offs after edging to a 4-3 win today.
They will face either the Tampa Bay Rays or the New York Yankees in the League Championship final, with the Rays also leading 2-0.
In the National League play-offs, the LA Dodgers are level at 1-1 with the Atlanta Braves, while the Milwaukee Brewers lead the San Diego Padres 2-0.
