Local SNP MSP Martyn Day claims “not a penny” of the cash pledged in the wake of last year’s closure of the Grangemouth oil refinery has yet been spent.

His remarks come after the region was dealt another body blow last week with the announcement of Syngenta’s plans to close its Grangemouth chemical plant, putting 377 jobs in jeopardy.

On Friday, local Labour MP Brian Leishman urged the Prime Minister to prove his commitment to reindustrialisation and to “step up and step in” at the site, a sentiment echoed by Mr Day.

Stating the SNP would “continue to push bosses to reconsider this decision,” he said: “Labour promised £200m of support for industry in Grangemouth, but not a penny of it has been delivered.”

“Grangemouth needs that money, and it needs it now — Andy Burnham must immediately tell the people of Grangemouth exactly when that money is coming and exactly how it will be spent.”

The Westminster government was approached for comment.
