The Owls, who have not identified the player, said they were working with the “relevant authorities” to ensure “those responsible are identified and held accountable.”

A club statement read: “We stand unequivocally with our player and his family, who have the club’s complete support. Racism is abhorrent. It has no place in football or in society, and we condemn this abuse in the strongest possible terms.”

The Owls added: “This is not the first incident of its kind involving our players, staff and their families this season. The continued targeting of individuals and their loved ones is utterly unacceptable […] There can be no tolerance, no excuses and no ambiguity when it comes to racism or discrimination of any kind. Sheffield Wednesday will continue to stand with those affected and take the strongest possible action against anyone responsible for such abuse.

Last weekend, the club joined scores of other teams to participate in the English Football League’s (EFL) Together Against Racism Campaign — a scheme set up to use dedicated matches to highlight the work done to tackle racism. The EFL said that its campaign is to encourage supporters to report incidents live directly to clubs when they occur, enabling clubs and authorities to intervene quickly, gather evidence and identify offenders.
