THE final results of the landmark Serbian election of October 25 were released on Thursday night.

The Students List, which emerged from two years of student protests against corruption and authoritarianism, will hold 140 seats in the 250-seat legislature, while the Serbian Progressive Party of defeated leader Aleksandar Vucic will have 103.

The Students List candidates — almost all of whom have never held political office before — have vowed to restore the rule of law and root out corruption.

Arrests have already begun of police officials, the owner of a bank and some state functionaries accused either of corruption or involvement in violent crackdowns on the protest movement. Mr Vucic has termed these measures a “revolutionary terror.”

The European Union has dangled the prospect of accelerating Serbia’s long-stalled admission process in front of the incoming government, though this will have political and economic strings attached.
