THE US ambassador has joined UK politicians to remember the 67 British people killed in the September 11 attacks 25 years on as peace activists reflect on the disastrous war on terror it spawned.

Ambassador Warren Stephens laid a white floral wreath at the September 11th Memorial Garden outside the former site of the US embassy in Grosvenor Square, central London, to pay respects to those killed in the terror attacks.

“It’s a tragedy none of us will ever forget,” he said.

“But we’ll also never forget the friendship the British people showed us with an outpouring of letters and flowers from all over the country.”

Paying his tribute, Prime Minister Andy Burnham said: “On the 25th anniversary of 9/11, we remember the nearly 3,000 people who were killed, including 67 Britons.

“My thoughts are with all those who lost friends and family members that terrible day. 

“Time may pass, but I know the grief is still felt just as deeply today.”

Meanwhile, for the man who led Britain 25 years ago, Sir Tony Blair said the anniversary served to “commemorate the unshakeable and essential bond” with the US, one which saw him join the then President George W Bush’s “war on terror.”

Stop the War Coalition convener Lindsey German, told the Star: “9/11 became the pretext for a new era of US-led intervention.

“Twenty-five years later, millions across the Middle East and South Asia in particular are dead, there’s a devastating proxy conflict being waged by Nato in Ukraine and a renewed drive to war across Europe and beyond.

“It’s difficult to believe that anyone could still defend the wars that successive US administrations have waged since 9/11, supported by consecutive British governments, yet the likes of Tony Blair appear still to do so.”

She added: “His support for George W Bush’s ‘war on terror’ and the invasion of Afghanistan led to the founding of the Stop the War Coalition, which has played a major role in opposing US and British imperialism. 

“It was the start of the largest anti-war movement in Britain’s history — most evident today in the incredible Palestine movement — and we mark this anniversary with a determination to build it ever stronger to resist the coming conflicts so many world leaders seem intent on walking us into.”
