SAUDI ARABIA says it intercepted two ballistic missiles and two cruise missiles fired by Yemen’s Houthi movement yesterday. Damage to an Aramco (Saudi Arabia’s state-owned oil company) building in Riyadh was apparently from debris from one of the shot-down missiles.

The strikes follow reports that the Saudi-led coalition fighting Ansar Allah, as the Houthis are formally termed, bombed the town of al-Shariyah east of the Yemeni capital Sanaa on Saturday, killing 33 and injuring 39. Footage on Yemeni television showed the bodies of dead children being removed from rubble.

That itself followed another deadly bombing in the Yemeni province of Taiz on Friday that killed 30, as the Saudis step up air raids in response to recent territorial advances by the Houthis.

Until September Houthi power in Yemen had for years extended across about a third of its territory containing two-thirds of its population, but since then its military has advanced rapidly to the south and west.
