The Gunners are languishing in seventh place in the Women’s Super League table after only two wins from their opening eight games, with Slegers’s position as head coach under increasing scrutiny.
The Dutchwoman has presented a calm front despite the frustrations and, ahead of tomorrow’s trip to Liverpool, Slegers said of her demeanour: “The way I present myself, what I choose to focus on, going in there with energy and a smile even though the natural reaction is not to, because it’s difficult for us right now.
“We do it because we believe it’s going to generate energy like we’ve spoken about, and we love to represent Arsenal. We need to spread positive energy around each other and with the group.
“There’s motivation and ambition to do better and turn this around among the staff and players, but I take full responsibility for the environment that we need to create.”
A 1-1 draw with Aston Villa at Ashburton Grove last weekend was another disappointing result, with the Gunners yet to win at home in the WSL this season.
Slegers admitted opponents have been emboldened by Arsenal’s difficulties so she will hope playing away this weekend can give her side more freedom.
“I believe we are making steps and players are in form and coming together,” she said. “I’m convinced that on Sunday you’ll see a good Arsenal team.”
Joint leaders Chelsea and Manchester City kick off the weekend with home matches against Everton and West Ham, respectively, today at lunchtime.
Vivianne Miedema returned to training this week having not played since May because of a knee injury, but City will not rush the forward back.
Boss Andree Jeglertz told a press conference: “It’s an amazing player that we are just looking forward to when she is back but we also know that we need to take it step by step.”
Elsewhere tomorrow, third-placed London City Lionesses will look to bounce back from their narrow loss to City when they face Birmingham while Manchester United travel to Villa and Tottenham host Brighton.
There is also a battle of the bottom two with Crystal Palace taking on Charlton.
