The Metropolitan Police said: “Detectives have assessed the information provided and determined that there are potential offences requiring investigation.”

Two Reform officials — policy head James Orr and Dan Jukes, a top aide to leader Nigel Farage — resigned their posts following the airing of a Channel 4 documentary apparently showing discussions on accepting a purported foreign donation to the party, which would be illegal.

Both men have denied any criminal wrongdoing, nor have any arrests been made.

The police move will pile additional pressure on Mr Farage, who is already facing parliamentary probes into other undeclared donations he has received.

In further bad news for the Reform boss, former leading Tory Tim Montgomerie announced that he has quit the hard-right party.  

He was earlier suspended by Reform for criticising Mr Farage.
