PALESTINE solidarity demonstrators rallied in Liverpool on Saturday, calling for Labour to go further in sanctioning Israel over the Gaza genocide and occupation of Palestine.

Thousands marched through the city before rallying outside the ACC centre where the ruling party’s conference was about to begin.

Palestine Solidarity Campaign deputy director Peter Leary said their message to delegates and the Prime Minister Andy Burnham was “stop arming Israel, full sanctions now!”

Earlier this month Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband announced a ban on trade with Israeli settlements on occupied Palestinian land, and on the export of weapons to Israel that “materially contribute to the occupation.”

But last week Declassified UK revealed that so far, no arms export licences have been suspended based on the new rules.

Addressing the rally, Stop the War Coalition convener Lindsey German said Mr Burnham had said in New York at the United Nations this week, “we stand with Israel.”

“Andy Burnham should understand that if he stands with Israel he will be making one of the biggest political mistakes of his life,” she warned.
