Organised labour key to defeating far right, Stand Up to Racism fringe meeting hears

“The far right are on the march and a serious threat at the ballot box. We need to challenge them, and for trade unions, that means the responsibility to expose Reform’s real agenda and the damage it would do to working-class communities,” Public & Commercial Services Union general secretary Fran Heathcote said.

Fire Brigades Union leader Steve Wright denounced racist attacks on emergency service workers, including staff and volunteers with the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.

“I know as a firefighter for 25 years I would be outraged if [racists] shut down a fire station I worked out of.

“That’s what these fascists have done: closed an RNLI station,” he warned.

“We are not going to stand by and allow that.“We are a humanitarian service. We don’t care who you are, where you’re from, what you look like: we save every single person,” he declared.
