NEWCASTLE’S manager Matthias Jaissle explained the changes to his team: “We went for more experience and leadership skills, in particular to give stabilisation for a young group.” The changes paid off as his side secured victory at Selhurst Park.
It was a frantic first half with not a lot of action in and around the boxes between both sides.
Seven minutes into game, the home side played nice one-touch football on the break, where a chance fell to Daichi Kamada on the edge of the area, but the shot went wide.
Five minutes later, Jean-Philippe Mateta had a half chance of his own, unfortunately for Palace, the French striker dragged his shot.
Just before half-time, Axel Disasi just needed any touch to get on the end of a Yeremy Pino cross and Palace would have been leading at the break.
Two minutes into the second half, the first goal of the game arrived, making up for the lacklustre first half.
William Osula put Newcastle ahead after Jacob Murphy put in a wicked cross from the right, the Danish striker got his toe to it beating Walter Benitez in the Palace goal.
Five minutes later, Harvey Barnes thought he had doubled the toon’s advantaged as he scored but VAR intervened and was ruled offside.
In the 58th minute, Barnes did get his goal. Nico Gonzalez passed the ball to Murphy, who waited for the overlapping Amar Dedic, who crossed it first time and Barnes slotted in cooly and celebrated in front of the ecstatic away fans as Newcastle doubled their lead.
The boos from the home fans seemed to have woken the players up as captain Adam Wharton had a strike at the edge of the area which forced a good save from Lukas Hornicek.
Newcastle then had a few strikes of their own a few minutes later from Joelinton and Barnes, with both shots going over the bar.
Substitute Dario Osorio hit a belter of a strike with his left foot from distance, Hornicek saved again as the ball this time went out for a corner.
The home side continued to push as Osorio had a few more shots, but they went over the bar as Newcastle held on to their clean sheet.
Crystal Palace boss Pierre Sage when asked about the boos at the final whistle and the noise around his future, said: “I don’t have to convince everyone else; I just have to convince the players to do their best and to compete whilst improving. For me, the noise around the team and noise around the club, is only noise”.
