Mac Allister had another chance, this time a header that nearly snuck near post from a Dominik Szoboszlai freekick out on the left-hand side.

Szoboszlai himself then tested Henderson with a low left footed strike from around 30 yards out, the Palace keeper saved for a corner as it was all Liverpool in the opening 15 minutes.

The home side finally woke up as Yeremy Pino rattled the bar with a fierce left footed strike in the area, as Tyrick Mitchell found the Spaniard in the area.

In the space of a few minutes, both teams had big chances as first £123 million summer signing Bradley Barcola skied high a volley from a Szoboszlai cross. A minute later Alisson made a huge save as Daichi Kamada volleyed sweetly from a Mitchell cross.

In the 40th minute, Liverpool took the lead as a Szoboszlai free kick from the right was met first by the head of Mac Allister beating Henderson.

Few minutes later, Alisson made sure Liverpool entered the break ahead as he made a sharp save from a deft Adam Wharton header.

Nine minutes into the second half, Liverpool doubled their advantage.

The away side attacked quickly as Barcola was in acres of space and then delivered a low cross to Florian Wirtz, the German playmaker finished first time into the bottom corner.

Pino had a great chance to score as substitute Darío Osorio slotted him through on a 2-on-1 break, Alisson made himself huge as he closed down Pino’s shot.

Liverpool broke quickly in the 87th minute, Alexander Isak was through on goal but his shot was saved as Henderson made a great save.

Two minutes later, the talismanic Swedish striker finally got his goal.

As Palace pushed, Trey Nyoni won the ball deep in the Liverpool half, passed it forward to Isak who then played it to Víctor Muñoz, he then passed across the box to Wirtz, the German passed quickly to Isak, who chopped the sliding Chris Richards before slotting in.

The home side got a consolation in added time as Eddie Nketiah scored a penalty.

Liverpool boss Andoni Iraola was delighted with the win as his side bounced back from back defeats.

As for his counterpart Pierre Sage, it wouldn’t be a surprise if that was his final game for Crystal Palace.
