England captain Kane is the odds-on favourite for football’s most prestigious individual award after scoring 61 goals for Bayern Munich last season and another 12 for his country.

The winner will be announced at the London Palladium on Monday night, and while Kane would love to know the outcome in advance, he accepts the suspense is part of the occasion.

“I try not to think about it; obviously it is hard not to,” he said. “There are always rumours and stuff flying around so you try to stay away from it.

“I think my wife would prefer to know and my family, it’s very stressful for everyone.

“But it is their decision, I can’t control that. We’ll have to just enjoy it and try not to stress out too much.”

Kane is bidding to become only the fifth Englishman – and the first in 25 years – to win the Ballon d’Or, following Stanley Matthews, Bobby Charlton, Kevin Keegan and Michael Owen.

Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal and Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappe are also among the contenders.
