ISRAELI forces have withdrawn from Hebron in the southern occupied West Bank after a 10-day siege, allowing displaced families to return home.

Governor Khaled Dudin announced today that “Palestinian security forces have taken full control of the area following the Israeli withdrawal.”

The siege was imposed on October 23 after a shooting attack near the city allegedly by two Palestinians that killed two Israeli soldiers.

Hebron Mayor Youssef al-Jaabari said the municipality was informed of the withdrawal at 6am local time.

“For the first time in 10 days, schoolchildren are going to their schools,” he told Al Jazeera, adding that five universities had been closed and all economic, educational and health activity had stopped.

Some 537 families were forced out at night, and more than 3,300 Palestinians were displaced or otherwise affected.

The municipality said 15 homes and structures had been demolished and 327 shops closed, with losses exceeding 12 million shekels a day.

The operation was launched days before Israel’s general elections last month.

Benjamin Netanyahu and his right-wing allies secured the most seats but failed to win a majority, leaving Israel without a clear path to a new government.
