Israel air strikes on Lebanese village leave 12 dead

The attack on Kfar Rumman came amid a new round of escalation between Israel and resistance group Hezbollah, despite a truce agreed more than two months ago, and days after Israel’s military said it was in “operational control” of the strategic Ali Taher hill, which overlooks several villages as well as main roads leading to the city of Nabatiyeh.

The Health Ministry said that one of the strikes had hit a building, killing 11 people, including two children and four women. Eight were also wounded, including three children and a paramedic.

The ministry said that another strike on a car in the village had killed a paramedic with the Lebanese Islamic Risala Scout Association and wounded two others.

“We have been living in constant anxiety amid shelling on the outskirts,” said Kfar Rumman resident Fouad Chakaron while standing in front of the destroyed building. “Now they struck the heart of the town.”

Fellow resident Saleh Medlej pointed to the building’s ruins and said it had been the home of families with children. “Are there missiles here?” he asked.

Earlier in the day, Israel forces struck a home in the village of Deir al-Zahrani soon after issuing an evacuation warning. There was no word on casualties, but the Israeli military said the strike was in retaliation for a Hezbollah drone attack.

On Sunday, Israeli attacks killed at least seven people in southern Lebanon and destroyed an empty hospital.

A US-brokered truce has been repeatedly violated, with Israel carrying out air strikes in Lebanon and Hezbollah firing drones at Israeli troops.

Signed in June, the US-mediated framework deal provided for Israeli forces to withdraw from southern Lebanon in exchange for Hezbollah’s disarmament, but little progress has been made in its implementation.

Hezbollah, which is not a party to the Lebanon-Israel talks, has said it will not give up its weapons in any area north of the Litani river, while Israeli officials refuse to withdraw troops unless Hezbollah is disarmed throughout the country.

Kfar Rumman Mayor Abdullah Farhat, described what happened in his village as “a massacre in every sense of the word.”

He blasted the framework agreement, saying that Lebanon’s leaders had “signed deals and we are paying the price here.”
