The death toll from the raid on Binnari in the state of Taraba just after midday Muslim prayers on Friday, but only now reported, may well be higher.

Some eyewitnesses said over 20 people were killed and a non-governmental organisation said the death toll could be as high as 50.

The gunmen reportedly swooped on the village mounted on motorcycles in a rampage that went on for up to four hours.

The attackers had fled by the time the police arrived on the scene.

Police assistant superintendent Victor Mshelizah said: “We were able to disperse the unknown gunmen though there was no casualty on their side and ours because the terrain is difficult and they’re used to the terrain.”

Community leader Malam Abubakar Saifullahi said the attackers “looted shops and took cash, foodstuffs and other provisions.”

Nigeria continues to face attacks by armed groups across several regions, including the north-west, north-east and central regions.

The country is also battling a jihadist insurgency in its north-east that has lasted nearly two decades, drawing persistent criticism of the government’s handling of insecurity.
