The demand comes after Chancellor John Healey announced new minimum wages of £11.27 an hour for workers between 18 to 20 and £13.21 an hour for those aged 21 from April 2027, despite a Labour manifesto pledge to equalise the rates.

Tabling an amendment to a Scottish government motion on young people in work, Green MSP Iris Duane has called on Holyrood to back calls for Labour to make good on that pledge.

“Life isn’t cheaper if you are younger,” said Ms Duane ahead of the debate today.

“Young workers are facing the same rising living costs as everyone else.

“They still have to pay rent, buy food, heat their homes and travel to work, yet they are expected to get by on a lower minimum wage simply because of their age.

“It is particularly disappointing that Labour has failed to honour its manifesto commitment to scrap these discriminatory age bands, and is going backwards.

“Young workers should not have to wait any longer for equal treatment.”
