The meeting was called to hear from the city’s striking university workers as well as a speaker from Paris sharing their experiences of the ongoing revolt there, and went ahead despite the best efforts of the band of balaclava-clad fascists.

In black attire, the mob – a number of whom were recognised by witnesses as being involved in recent attempted pogroms and the violent clashes witnessed on Glasgow Green in July – attempted to kick the venue’s door, hurling abuse and threats of violence at those who stood firm to prevent them.

In a statement, the SWP’s Glasgow branch said: “Nobody should give credibility to the lie that these are ‘concerned citizens’ with ‘legitimate concerns.’”

“The targets of these attacks are those defending public services and campaigning for democratic rights at work and in wider society.

“We will not be intimidated in the face of threats and attacks and urge all across the left to stand united and in solidarity with one another in the face of these attacks.”

Slamming Restore Britain and Reform UK’s role in giving “street fascists oxygen with their Islamophobic and racist arguments,” they added: “We urge all to be part of building Stand Up to Racism and its activities, which have proved an effective way of weakening the far right, but need now to be built on a much bigger scale across workplaces and communities.

“Let us respond to all the attacks on our movement with an enormous mobilisation for the Scottish Trades Union Congress St Andrew’s Day annual march against racism and fascism, in Glasgow on Saturday November 28.”
