MA XINGRUI, a former member of China’s Communist Party politburo, has been charged with taking bribes, state media reported today.
Mr Ma’s name was among 33 senior officials whose expulsions from the party were confirmed at the fifth plenary session of its current central committee last week. His previous roles included running the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, key to the country’s space programme, and serving as party secretary of the huge city of Shenzhen and later the vast Xinjiang autonomous region.
The charges follow a plenary session which stressed “rigorous self-governance” in the Communist Party and its need to continually root out corruption and hold itself accountable to the people.
A nationwide crackdown on “formalism, bureaucracy, hedonism and extravagance” among Communist Party cadres began shortly after Xi Jinping became general secretary in 2012.
The anti-corruption crackdown forms part of a wider reshaping of party culture key to mass participation campaigns like the 2013-20 mobilisation to eliminate absolute poverty, which saw over three million officials deployed to poverty-stricken areas.
