THE Socialist Campaign Group of MPs held a confident, well attended meeting to launch a pamphlet — The Socialist Policies We Need — outlining an agenda much of the left could get behind.

It is significant that affiliated union leaders addressed the rally. Swaying the government in a socialist direction will only be the result of mass pressure from below.

Organised labour is essential to that but so will be mobilisations on the streets. Labour lacks the mass youth membership of a decade ago, and will not regain it quickly if at all. Many of those who would help campaign for such policies in public belong to other parties now, especially the Greens.

Thought should be given to how we involve the maximum number of people in the campaign for an alternative economic and political strategy. Trades councils and organisations such as the People’s Assembly ought to be part of this process.
