THE death toll from a Russian attack on a site where people had gathered to receive humanitarian aid in southern Ukraine rose to 31 today, with dozens still missing.
Rescuers and volunteers searched the cratered blast site of a destroyed aid facility and shelter in Komyshuvakha, in the Zaporizhzhia region, hoping to find more than 45 missing residents alive.
But more bodies were pulled out and carried away in white plastic sheeting during the day.
“The scale of the tragedy is terrifying,” Mykhailo Semikin, acting head of the region’s military administration, wrote online.
“This is one of the worst tragedies in terms of the number of civilian victims in our region since the start of the full-scale war.”
Russia launched 289 attack drones, 17 ballistic missiles and 59 cruise missiles across nine regions, triggering emergency power cuts, President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a post in which he once again pleaded for more weapons.
In the north-east region of Kharkiv, a combined Russian missile and drone attack wounded at least 62 people and damaged a medical facility, with more than 200 patients transferred elsewhere, said Oleh Syniehubov, head of the regional military administration.
In the Dnipro area, rescuers pulled a woman alive from the rubble this morning, after a Russian attack killed one person and wounded 17, local authorities said.
Russia’s Ministry of Defence said that it shot down 856 Ukrainian drones overnight.
Meanwhile, a 14-year-old boy was found at a secret detention facility linked to Ukraine’s notorious far-right Azov Corps (formerly the Azov Battalion) near Kiev on Monday, amid reports of torture and the unlawful imprisonment of dozens of people.
Footage circulating on social media shows the teenager being escorted from the property in Petropavlivska Borshchahivka, a suburb west of Kiev.
Azov confirmed that one of its military units operated at the location, where several injured servicemen were also discovered.
The scandal erupted after reports emerged that armed personnel were holding dozens of people inside a private house.
Videos showed residents attempting to break through the gates, confronting masked personnel and demanding the release of those reportedly being held in its basement.
Witnesses accused those operating the facility of beating and torturing detainees, claiming that several were in critical condition and had been denied medical assistance.
Eyewitnesses said the teenager had been beaten with a shovel.
Kyrylo Budanov, head of Mr Zelensky’s office, visited the scene, describing the situation as “something that should not happen” and promising to investigate.
Asked about the facility, Mr Budanov said: “Many similar buildings exist,” according to Ukraine’s Channel 24, adding that 14 people were being held at the property.
According to the Azov Corps, the property had been used by Military Unit 3121 as a “temporary deployment facility” where mobilised servicemen and soldiers apprehended after going absent without leave were “accommodated” before being transferred to their units.
Ukrainian police had earlier dismissed reports of unlawful detention and a death inside the building, and ambulance personnel complained that they had been prevented from reaching a patient.
Azov was established in 2014 by far-right militants with neonazi connections, amid the erupting civil war in eastern Ukraine following the Maidan coup, and was incorporated into the Ukrainian National Guard later that year.
