Unite general secretary Sharon Graham welcomed the Transport for London’s (TfL) “important concession” yesterday following their successful campaign to put an end to “appalling conditions.”

The capital’s bus operator committed to fitting all bus driver cabs with air conditioning by May 2027.

“This concession from TfL is an important win in Unite’s campaign to improve conditions for bus drivers in London and beyond,” Ms Graham said.

“Inadequate cooling systems in buses have left bus drivers having to endure appalling conditions this summer.”

TUC general secretary Paul Nowak welcomed the campaign win, adding that the government should now “urgently review the wider changes needed to adapt the UK for hotter summers.

“This should include maximum workplace temperatures. Clear legal limits would incentivise all employers to make the changes needed for Britain to carry on working safely in extreme heat.”
