What missiles and drones do the Houthis have?

A rapid offensive by Yemen’s Houthis has intensified the country’s civil war and caused chaos in global oil markets.

The group, which has controlled much of northern Yemen for over a decade, has seized fresh territory from the pro-government forces and threatened shipping traffic, notably that of Saudi Arabia, in the Bab el-Mandeb strait, the maritime chokepoint linking the Gulf of Aden to the Red Sea and the Suez Canal.

With few signs of military formality, the group has often been described in international media as a "ragtag fighting force".

But over the past two decades, the Houthis have evolved to use missiles and drones to stage attacks inside Yemen as well as against Israel, Saudi Arabia and the UAE, among others.

Much of the group’s arsenal has either been designed or supplied by Iran, which regards the force as a member of its Axis of Resistance, a network of allies that also includes Hamas and Hezbollah.

The Houthis have also acquired weapons, including decades-old Soviet-era tanks and helicopters, after victory on the battlefield, and recently seized US-supplied military vehicles captured from retreating Saudi-backed forces.

While the Houthis’ stockpile levels are unknown, it is possible to assemble a sense of their firepower and military capabilities.
