US weighing feasibility of diesel export ban after Trump support

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has said that the administration was examining whether a ban on diesel exports was feasibile, after US President Donald Trump said he backed such a ban amid a record surge in diesel prices, Reuters reported.

Their remarks came as Republican candidates in some of the tightest election races in November called for the measure as a way to curb record fuel prices.

Diesel prices have shot to record highs in the US and Europe as wars in Iran and Ukraine sharply cut exports from some of the biggest producers such as Russia, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

"I've said let's not send out the diesel. We make a lot of diesel ... I've called for it. I've called for it within my people," Trump told reporters ahead of a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, according to Reuters.

Speaking at the same meeting, Bessent said, "We are examining whether a full or partial ban would work".
