Spain's Sanchez pledges continued support for Lebanon after Unifil withdrawal

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez met with his Lebanese counterpart Nawaf Salam in New York City on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday.

In a post on X, Sanchez said that Spain would continue to support Lebanon and work with European partners to strengthen the capabilities of the Lebanese Armed Forces following the end of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (Unifil) peacekeeping mission, set to expire at the end of the year.

"Our country maintains a firm commitment to [Lebanon's] sovereignty, its security, and its territorial integrity," he said, adding that "the ceasefire must be fully respected, and dialogue must pave the way toward a lasting peace".
