Pentagon watchdog says war on Iran led to 'strategic' US munitions shortfalls

A report by the Pentagon’s inspector general on the impact of the US war 0n Iran found that munitions used during the four-month campaign caused inventory shortfalls and exposed bottlenecks for munitions resupply.

The Defense Department’s inspector general released the first report on the war with Iran, covering 1 April through 30 June.

According to the Pentagon watchdog, munitions expenditure during the war "has resulted in strategic inventory shortfalls and revealed industrial base bottlenecks for munitions resupply".

To mitigate the constraints, the report said that the Pentagon is "working to streamline procurement processes and production lead times and to stockpile critical materials, components and selected munitions to respond rapidly to a contingency".

US President Donald Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth have repeatedly denied media reports over depleted arms stockpiles.

However, the latest report estimated the cost of the war on Iran at $33.4 billion as of 29 June, including $22.3 billion for expended munitions and $3.7 billion in equipment losses based on replacement cost.
