Gaza's "Ceasefire" Has Killed Over 1,400 People Since It Started

On October 10, 2025, the world was told the killing in Gaza had stopped. Almost a year later, Gaza's Health Ministry says Israeli attacks have killed more than 1,400 Palestinians since that day — men, women, and children shot, shelled, or drone-struck under a truce that international media still calls a "ceasefire" without the scare quotes it has earned. The Gaza Media Office counts over 5,100 separate violations of the agreement. Seven Israeli soldiers have died in the same period. The ratio tells you everything about who this truce was actually built to protect.

The pattern is not new, it is just quieter than the genocide's open phase. A drone hits a displaced family's tent near Sheikh Radwan. A sniper kills a man collecting firewood in Khan Younis. Artillery lands near al-Mawasi, the same "safe zone" Israel has bombed repeatedly since 2024. Each incident gets a one-paragraph wire story, an Israeli military statement about "threats," and then nothing — no accountability, no ceasefire monitors with teeth, no consequence. The bodies keep arriving at the same hospitals that were themselves bombed during the war's "active" phase.

What the ceasefire actually froze was not violence but visibility. Coverage collapsed the moment the front-page war ended, even as the deaths continued climbing — 677 by March, 750 by April, 890 by May, and past 1,400 by late September. That is not a dwindling tail of stray incidents. It is a rising line, meaning whatever "phase two" of this truce was supposed to deliver has instead normalized a lower, steadier rate of killing that the world has agreed to stop counting as war.

This is what ceasefires look like when they are negotiated to manage an occupying power's international image rather than to end its violence: a document that trades a spike in deaths for a permanent, tolerated baseline of them. The same governments that congratulated themselves on brokering "peace" in October 2025 have said nothing as the toll passed 1,400 killed and nearly 5,000 wounded under that same peace. Genocide doesn't need a ceasefire to end it if the ceasefire itself still authorizes the killing, just at a pace the wire services find less newsworthy.

Solidarity work now has to fight amnesia as much as it fights the occupation. The one-year mark of this "ceasefire" is not an anniversary to mark quietly — it's a body count with a start date, and it's still rising.
