Revolutionary communists assemble worldwide to defend the Cuban Revolution

On 3 October, the Revolutionary Communist International held an international day of action in solidarity with the Cuban Revolution and against US imperialism.

Cuba is under siege. Since January, the 67-year-old imperialist blockade on the island has been dramatically tightened, as the US took over Cuba’s main supplier of oil – Venezuela – and threatened Mexico into stopping supplies too. Last Friday, 2 October, the US Coast Guard announced it had intercepted another ship carrying fuel to Cuba.

Life on the island –  including education and healthcare – has been brought to a halt. On top of this, Marco Rubio has regularly rolled out additional sanctions to disrupt shipping, mining, and tourism. Plus, America’s military presence is continually increasing around and above the island.

This is a brutal and criminal siege aimed at forcing Cuba into surrender by hunger. 

Isolated and suffocated, the Cuban Revolution is in its most dangerous period yet. The Cuban leadership is looking towards capitalist restoration to break its isolation and stagnation.

The crushing of the Cuban Revolution would be a blow to the world working class. The only way forward is to fight for a world socialist revolution.

On Saturday 3 October, sections of the RCI all around the world organised rallies and meetings in defence of the Cuban Revolution. 

The weight of Yankee imperialism over the island puts a particular duty on the US section of the RCI, the Revolutionary Communists of America, to take up the banner in defence of Cuba. Ultimately, the people of Cuba and the workers of the United States have the same enemy: the US imperialists, who are attempting to starve the island into submission while growing rich on the labour of workers in the US and around the world.

The RCA held rallies in nine major cities across the country, from Seattle to New York and from Phoenix to Chicago. Their campaign received the endorsement of other socialist organisations and figures, including Chris Smalls and Kshama Sawant. 

Red flags emblazoned with the hammer and sickle alongside Cuban flags flying across major cities worldwide received a lot of attention on social media. The RCI’s day of action caught the attention of the left-wing Cuban editorial collective Punto Y Aparte, which published an interview with a leading comrade of the RCA, discussing our initiative and the work of the RCA more broadly, which you can read here.
