In solidarity with Daniel Viehmann, electricity saboteur

Deutsch (original) · Auto-translated to English

THANK YOU DANIEL

A few weeks have passed since eco-saboteur Daniel carried out nationwide attacks on the German power grid. To do this, he fired self-made rockets over high-voltage lines, a method he invented himself. In one of the attacks in North Rhine-Westphalia, 5 power plant blocks (lignite) were taken offline for several days. Much media attention followed and after a nationwide manhunt, Daniel was arrested. Daniel is currently in custody and faces up to 10 years in prison.

HIS WORDS

So far, we have seen little - or no - public solidarity with Daniel. We ask ourselves what lies behind the silence. For us there is no reason for silence or even distance. With this text we want to break this silence and show that there are many reasons to believe that Daniel's fight is also our fight.

The strongest justification for our solidarity lies in Daniel's own words. Only a few sentences from his letters of confession were initially made public. The published first page provides more information about Daniel's motivations. Here we publish this page (see photo) and call on anyone who has access to the missing pages of his letters of confession: Make Daniel's words public so that Daniel can speak for himself.

What the press did not report, but which he himself describes as the reasons for his actions: his actions were not only against fossil power generation but also against the German arms industry and, above all, their participation in the genocide in Palestine.

AN ADEQUATE ANSWER TO FOSSIL REALITY

“Generating electricity from fossil fuels is a crime that causes untold suffering.”

This is not a complicated connection, nothing that has not been scientifically understood for a long time. Fossil energy production is one of the main causes of global climate change – all of this is easy to understand. It is just as simple that in order to get out of the cycle of suffering, the source of it must be destroyed. From our point of view, Daniel's reaction is just as logical.

So he had good reasons to do what had to be done. The climate movement must also recognize the fact that CO2 emissions continue to rise significantly year after year. After many years of widespread civil protest and civil disobedience, it is clear there is no realistic solution to the problem. It is therefore a logical consequence for the climate movement to use acts of sabotage in combat.

THE MOVEMENT IS SILENT

Many people (including companions) claim Daniel is either crazy or certainly one of Putin's agents. It is also illogical that he published his name and address. Each of these arguments frees us from the obligation (or opportunity) to take his actions seriously. Isn't what Daniel tried to implement exactly a secret longing that lies within many of us?

AND THE STATE WANTS TO BETTER PROTECT CRITICAL INFRASTRUCTURE

As a result of Daniel's actions, the state and the press portray the so-called critical infrastructure as being at great risk. Counts of suspected sabotage cases are published, in addition to Daniel, a data leak in Berlin and Russian drone attacks at Leipzig Airport. As part of the KRITIS umbrella law that came into force in March, increased AI monitoring of the so-called critical infrastructure (critical for whom and for what?) is also to be implemented.

Regardless of how endangered the so-called critical infrastructure really is, the media explosiveness depicted around Daniel's actions also expresses their effectiveness. Increased surveillance and repression shows insecurity & vulnerabilities of the state. And so we think that if one action does not fall into the fallacy of wanting to change the situation through demands on those in power, increased repression must be expected. Anything else would have no significant effect on the status quo. As frightening as the uncertainty may sound to some, we believe it is necessary to actually stop the destruction of this industrial civilization.

SO WHAT IF DANIELS ACTION COUNTS?

More important than the 'power' you actually have is the power our opponents believe we have. So when the German state talks about the insecurity of its critical infrastructure after Daniel did what he had to do, we think he has taken the right and important step, which gives us courage for all further steps.

There will be further steps to be taken until it is recognized that the only way to protect critical infrastructure is to establish infrastructures that are not based on exploitation and destruction of the biosphere – then there would be no reason for sabotage.

We are grateful for Daniel's courage and all the suffering he endures in the face of the repression that now threatens him. We stand in solidarity behind Daniel, light candles for him, a light from a distance.

He writes that he did it alone, without anyone's help, and didn't tell anyone about it. But he is not alone out there, there are many of us who are fighting the same suffering elsewhere (with him). And Daniel's actions give us courage not to give up.

P.S.: We want to make one thing clear, this is not an attempt to speak for Daniel. We don't know whether Daniel agrees with our statement or not. We speak for ourselves and to you, you who also fight against climate change, militarization and authoritarianism in general. We encourage all efforts to establish contact with Daniel and thereby enable him to communicate with the outside world – if this is also in Daniel's interest.

Solidarity with Daniel, solidarity with all eco-saboteurs!
