The day we found out that we had been designated a global terrorist organization, we promised that we would try to resist as long as possible and that we would not back down while we still saw opportunities to defend our position. For years we have proudly maintained and defended a free, privacy-friendly, autonomous and politically engaged infrastructure.

“Stay human” is not an empty phrase for us.

Above all, it means that we have a responsibility to protect our users – those who build the human networks we rely on and the communities who have showered us with messages of support and solidarity.

We cannot wage a struggle or subject ourselves to manipulations that threaten the lives of these people and their families and put them at the mercy of autocrats, fascists and authorities who take extralegal measures. The possibility that our work could have legal and financial consequences for those close to us - or even in any way associated with us - leaves us with no other choice.

A/I ceases operations. The Autistici/Inventati collective is disbanding and will soon cease all services we offer.

There is no easy way to announce or explain this.

Every day we stayed online after August 26, 2026 was a victory, but now we are forced to stop.

None of us consider heroic gestures and martyrs particularly valuable, so we will not demand sacrifices. Neither from us nor from anyone else. In this political climate, continuing to provide our services puts our users and everyone who is part of our communities at risk. In a world where accusations lose all connection to reality, we must expect that repression will become increasingly disproportionate. Under these circumstances, we are no longer able to maintain our original mission - namely to provide secure and non-commercial digital tools.
