Demolition of the refuge against gentrification

On October 30th, a shelter against gentrification was built at the top of the upgrade in the Klybeck area in order to continue to meet on site, even in cold and wet times, to warm up and to organize an alternative urban development from below. It was destroyed on November 5th.

While people around the world are in uprising and defending themselves against militarization, the increasingly expensive cost of living, and the work and housing crisis, SwissLife and the government of the city of Basel once again have nothing better to do than destroy the solid and, above all, practical shelter against gentrification. But why exactly? The square belongs to SwissLife, but at least the CMS spent 50,000 in 2024 on the “participatory opening and revitalization of the square”. However, it is undesirable that people from the neighborhood are now offering a more meaningful and truly communal and participatory use of the place for free - something the city of Basel can only dream of.

It's so ridiculous: once again the city has been given a place to live together. A shelter so that people who are often on the pitch can sit in the dry; where young people can hang out; that the weekly kitchen for everyone can take place even in bad weather. But that doesn't suit SwissLife or the government. That people organize themselves against systemic injustices, against the unsustainable normal state of an increasingly expensive city.

Once again it becomes clear: SwissLife is not creating a new district, SwissLife is destroying the existing one. SwissLife destroys culture, destroys community, destroys every attempt to make a better life of solidarity possible for everyone. The suffocating stranglehold of capitalism and its simultaneous devaluation of people's needs do not allow us to breathe. Let's free ourselves from this stranglehold!

One thing is clear: there is enough unused space in Basel ;-) Let's see where else the ZACK can make itself so comfortable. From now on it's time to show your teeth again. See you. Our dreams cannot be cleared away - The sky is the limit.
