About 300 people rallied outside the Inner West Council meeting at Ashfield Town Hall on October 20 to demand real consultation time and more information about its so-called Fairer Future Plan 2 (FFP2).
The Fairer Future Part 1’s rezoned large sections of the inner west for luxury high-rise apartments.
The rally was organised by No High Rise Lilyfield and supported by a range of community groups, including the Better Future Coalition, Leichhardt Matters, Save Marrickville, Save Dulwich Hill and Action for Public Housing.
Lucy Wynter from No High Rise Lilyfield said the Fairer Future plan is “ill-conceived, underdone, under-prepared, not explained to the public and the time we’ve had to digest it has been paltry”.
Wynter said that when FFP2 was announced, she started a WhatsApp group chat with neighbours and friends in Lilyfield. A few weeks later, there are 700 members of the group chat, “about 10% of the population of Lilyfield. That shows how much this matters to people.”
Lilyfield residents did not receive a notice about FFP2 until two weeks into the six-week consultation period and many have still not received any information at all.
“That means we can’t provide informed consent; we cannot provide feedback to a plan we don’t understand or have not seen,” Wynter said.
“We are ordinary mums and dads, and we think it's unfair to implement the biggest change in the history of the Inner West, on such a broad scale, without actually asking us.”
