On Saturday 31 October, neo-nazi thugs decided the best thing they could do with their day was take a trip to Freedom Bookshop in Whitechapel, and threaten and attack the volunteers and visitors to the shop.
The 15 or so masked up men filmed themselves spouting nonsense about “degenerate books” and making Hitler salutes. The volunteer locked the shop, a passerby confronted them and half the group fled. The man defended himself and was punched once before the rest of the group made their escape down Aldgate East tube.
Since then our heart has been warmed by the many expressions of solidarity.
As our friends from Plan C wrote, Freedom was attacked because it represents a history of anti-fascist resistance in East London.
Whilst this has happened to Freedom now, this concerns all of us. Let this be the catalyst to rally together.
Against fascist intimidation it is especially important to prioritise coming together, strengthening our existing networks, and organising for the sake of our community.
